National Do-Not-Call List

Are you tired of those annoying telemarketing calls every evening? Do you get caught up in the confusing lists and promises of methods to avoid those calls? Well, in 2003 the federal government made available to Americans a way to register your phone number in a national database that blocks your phone number from being called by telemarketers. Under the auspices of the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), the National Do-Not-Call registry can be accessed via a website or a 1-800 number. You must renew your registration once every five years.

  • www.donotcall.gov When you register on the website, you will need to provide the phone number you want blocked, as well as a valid email address to receive a confirmation.
  • 1-888-382-1222. Call this number from the telephone you want to register to be blocked.

According to the FTC, the list will block about 80% of telemarketing calls. Telemarketers are required to check the list every three months. Those who call listed people can be fined up to $11,000 for each violation. Consumers can file complaints on the Do Not Call website.

Please Note: Charities, pollsters, and callers on behalf of politicians are exempt from the Do Not Call telemarketing rules.
